Extendable Dining Tables

Most days, a dining table is where the family eats together, and now and then it needs to make room for guests. Son&Bear extendable dining tables are made for both. They stay at their everyday size for family meals, open up when guests come and close again afterwards, with a top in sintered stone or solid ash on a base we design ourselves.

Two ways our tables extend

Our extendable dining tables open in one of two ways. The Alto Extendable grows in length. It keeps the panel base of the Alto and adds a leaf stored in the table, so the 1.3-metre size opens to 2.0 metres and the 1.6-metre size to 2.3 metres. As a guide, with your chairs, the smaller size seats four, extending to eight, and the larger seats six, extending to ten.

The Alvi, Levi, Lila, Linus, Lior and Nora keep a softened everyday shape and open into a full round, from 1.2 to 1.6 metres across. Our round dining tables page shows them next to our fixed rounds.

Choosing the size and top

Whether you live in a condominium or a landed home in Malaysia, an extendable, or expandable, dining table lets one table serve everyday meals and family gatherings. Plan the room around the opened size, and leave about 900 mm behind each chair so someone can walk past. Every table stands on a solid ash base in six finishes. For the top, choose sintered stone, which resists heat, stains and scratches and wipes clean in a single pass, or solid ash, which can be sanded back and re-oiled rather than replaced. Apart from the Alvi, which is solid ash only, every model can be ordered as a sintered stone extendable dining table.

See them in Bangsar and Kuching

Visit our showrooms in Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur and at Galacity Prime in Kuching to see the tables at full size. Bring your floor plan and our team will sketch the room with you. Our dining chairs are made to pair with our tables, so you can plan the whole extendable dining set together.

Questions people ask

How does an extendable dining table work?

There are two kinds. The Alto Extendable keeps its panel base and adds a leaf that is stored in the table, so the 1.3-metre size opens to 2.0 metres and the 1.6-metre size to 2.3 metres. The Alvi, Levi, Lila, Linus, Lior and Nora open from their everyday shape into a full round, and our round dining tables page explains how each one opens.

What size extendable dining table do I need?

Plan the room around the opened size, not the closed one, and allow about 900 mm behind each chair so someone can walk past. As a guide, with your chairs, the 1.3 to 2.0-metre Alto Extendable seats four, extending to eight, and the 1.6 to 2.3-metre size seats six, extending to ten. Our round extendables open into rounds from 1.2 to 1.6 metres across. Every product page lists each size in centimetres, so you can check it against your lift, doorways and room before you decide.

Can I have an extendable dining table in sintered stone?

Yes. The Alto Extendable, Levi, Lila, Linus, Lior and Nora all come with a top in sintered stone or solid ash on the same solid ash base, and only the Alvi is made in solid ash alone. Sintered stone resists heat, stains and scratches and wipes clean in a single pass, while solid ash can be sanded back and re-oiled rather than replaced. Our dining tables page explains how to choose between sintered stone and solid wood.

Is the same design available as a fixed table?

Yes. The Alvi, Levi, Lila, Linus, Lior and Nora each come in a Non-Extendable version, which is the same table without the mechanism, fixed at its everyday size, and you will find them with the rest of our dining tables. The Alto Extendable has no fixed version of its own, but the Alto Dining Table has the same panel base and comes in seven fixed sizes, from 1.4 to 2.4 metres.

What warranty comes with an extendable dining table?

Every Son&Bear dining table comes with a 1 Year Limited Warranty, which covers repair or replacement if a manufacturing defect in materials or workmanship appears in normal use within the first year, in addition to your rights under the Consumer Protection Act 1999. It does not cover misuse or normal wear and tear, such as scratches, watermarks and food stains, or marks from hot objects placed directly on a wood top, so keep a trivet nearby. Solid wood moves naturally with humidity, and this is not treated as a defect. The full terms are on our warranty page.

Where can I see Son&Bear extendable dining tables in Malaysia?

You can see them at our showrooms in Bangsar, at 100 Jalan Maarof, Kuala Lumpur, open from 11am to 8pm, and at Galacity Prime, Jalan Tun Jugah, Kuching, open from 10am to 7pm, both every day of the week. There is no need to book, and pets are always welcome, so feel free to bring the dog. Bring your floor plan too, and our team will sketch the room with you, with samples in hand, before you decide.
