Choosing a sofa material when you have a dog or cat

In short

No sofa material is completely safe from claws, but a smooth, wipe-clean surface copes with dogs and cats much better than looped, pile or loosely woven fabric: claws have little to catch on, and hair and spills wipe away. Son&Bear calls only its Eco-Series leathers (Eco-Lux, Eco-Tex and Eco-Prime) pet-friendly: they are water-resistant, scratch-resistant and clean with a damp cloth. Light everyday marks can still appear over time, so choose between the three by feel and finish, and keep claws trimmed.

In a home with a dog or cat, the sofa belongs to them as much as to anyone. It is where the dog naps in the afternoon, where the cat keeps watch from the backrest, and where everyone ends up together in the evening. Whether you live in a condo in Kuala Lumpur or a house in Kuching, it has to cope with all of you.

This guide explains plainly how sofa materials hold up to pets, what any upholstery can and cannot take, and how to look after the one you choose, whether or not you buy from Son&Bear. Son&Bear furniture is made for the way families live, and for many families that includes a pet.

What does a dog or cat actually do to a sofa?

Each habit tests a different part of the material.

  • Claws. Cats scratch to mark territory and keep their claws in shape, and many knead before they settle. Dogs scrabble when they jump up, and some dig at the cushions before lying down.
  • Hair. Short, stiff hair works its way into textured fabric. Long, soft hair sits on top but travels everywhere.
  • Wet things. Drool, muddy paws, a knocked-over water bowl and the occasional accident.

Which sofa materials cope with cats and dogs?

Upholstery falls into a few broad families, and each behaves differently with pets.

Looped weaves such as bouclé feel lovely, but a loop is exactly what a claw hooks into. One pulled loop is easy to tidy; a cat that scratches the same arm every day will wear it out.

Pile fabrics such as chenille have a soft, raised surface. Claws can pull the pile, hair clings to it, and a favourite sleeping spot can show as a flattened patch.

Flat, tight surfaces such as microfibre suede give claws less to catch, and hair brushes off more easily. They still mark, and liquid left on them will eventually soak in.

Smooth, leather-type surfaces have no loops or threads for claws to snag, hair sits on top, and spills can be wiped before they soak in. The trade-off is that a deep scratch shows on a smooth surface, so the finish you choose matters.

None of this means a pet can never sit on a bouclé sofa. Plenty of calm, older dogs live happily on fabric. But if your pet is young, lively or a committed scratcher, a wipe-clean surface will look better for longer.

Why does Son&Bear call only the Eco-Series pet-friendly?

Son&Bear's other fabrics, such as bouclé, chenille, Premium Suede and Velora, are all good sofa fabrics. But Son&Bear calls only three materials pet-friendly: the Eco-Series leathers, Eco-Lux, Eco-Tex and Eco-Prime.

They are water-resistant, scratch-resistant and easy to care for, and a damp cloth is the whole cleaning routine. Spills sit on the surface long enough to wipe away, and children's everyday marks come off the same way. Keeping the word to these three is deliberate: it is more useful to say clearly where pet-friendly applies than to stretch it.

How do Eco-Lux, Eco-Tex and Eco-Prime differ?

All three share the same practical qualities. What changes is how they feel and look, and that also changes how marks show.

As a general rule for leather-type surfaces, a visible grain or a matte finish disguises fine marks better than a smooth one. So if your cat kneads or your dog scrabbles up, Eco-Tex's grain or Eco-Prime's aged look will tend to hide everyday marks more easily. If your pets are gentle and softness matters to you, Eco-Lux is lovely to sit on. The Materials page shows all three side by side.

Will claws still mark a pet-friendly sofa?

Yes, they can, and it is worth knowing before you buy. Scratch-resistant means the surface stands up to everyday contact: paws, a quick jump, a pet turning round before it settles. It does not mean a determined cat cannot leave a mark. Son&Bear says plainly that light everyday marks on the Eco-Series are normal wear.

A few habits make a real difference:

  • Keep claws trimmed. Short claws leave fewer and lighter marks.
  • Put a sturdy scratching post right next to the sofa. Cats tend to scratch where they spend their time, so a post beside the sofa works better than one across the room.
  • Lay a throw on your pet's favourite spot. It takes the daily wear and can go in the wash.
  • Give smaller dogs and older cats a way up. The Byron Pet Step lets them climb on and off instead of jumping.

If your cat already treats furniture as a scratching post, no sofa material will fix that on its own. A good scratching post will do more than any upholstery.

How do you clean a sofa you share with a pet?

For the Eco-Series, the routine really is a damp cloth. Wipe away hair, drool, muddy paw prints and spills while they are fresh. The surface is water-resistant, which gives you time to reach for a cloth. Deal with accidents straight away. Avoid detergents, bleach, alcohol-based solvents and abrasive cleaners: they can damage the finish, and Son&Bear's warranty, which is in addition to your rights under the Consumer Protection Act 1999, does not cover damage caused by harsh cleaning agents. Keep the sofa out of strong direct sun where you can, because sun and moisture can change the colour of any upholstery over time.

If a mark will not come off with a damp cloth, message the Son&Bear team before trying anything stronger. For the other fabrics, see the sofa fabric guide.

Which Son&Bear sofas come in the Eco-Series?

The Klara is Son&Bear's signature Eco-Series sofa, and the Eco-Series is also offered on other models, including the Anderson and Milo. Most sofas in the range offer all three leathers, but not every model or version does, so check the fabric options on each sofa's page. Eco-Lux is also offered across Son&Bear's dining chairs, which have solid wood frames.

See it in person

It is much easier to judge a sofa material by touch, and with a pet, to see how they take to it. Son&Bear's showrooms welcome pets, so bring the dog, and the cat if they will travel.

Son&Bear has two showrooms in Malaysia. The Kuala Lumpur showroom is at 100 Jalan Maarof, Bangsar, open from 11am to 8pm every day, with parking on site. The Kuching showroom is at Galacity Prime, Jalan Tun Jugah, open from 10am to 7pm every day. All three Eco-Series leathers are on the swatch wall at both. No appointment is needed; if you want to try a particular sofa, message the showroom before you set off to check what is on the floor.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Son&Bear warranty cover damage from pets?

Son&Bear sofas carry a 3-year limited warranty on the frame structure and movable mechanism, and 1 year on soft furnishings, which include the leather and fabric covers, in addition to your rights under the Consumer Protection Act 1999. It covers defects in materials and workmanship, not deliberate, accidental or severe damage, whether caused by pets or otherwise. Light everyday marks on the Eco-Series are treated as normal wear rather than a defect.

Is the Eco-Series a sensible choice for a puppy that still chews?

No upholstery stands up to a teething puppy, the Eco-Series included. Chewing is about the puppy's age, not the material, so keep young dogs off the sofa when no one is watching and give them something they are allowed to chew. Once that phase passes, a wipe-clean surface makes muddy paws and drool much easier to deal with.

What sofa colour hides pet hair?

Hair is harder to spot on a colour close to your pet's coat, and a mid-tone is a sensible middle ground if you have one light and one dark pet. On a wipe-clean surface the colour matters less, because hair wipes away rather than weaving in. Son&Bear keeps the full range of colourways in its showrooms, so bring your pet, or a photo of their coat, to compare against the swatches.

Is Premium Suede a good fabric for pets?

Premium Suede is a water-repellent microfibre with a flat, tight surface, so claws have less to catch on than with a looped or pile fabric. Son&Bear does not call it pet-friendly, and a brushed surface can still show claw marks. It can suit a calm, older dog; for a cat that scratches, the Eco-Series is the safer choice.
